CHURCH CONSTRUCTION – DESIGN YOU FIRST

D-E-S-I-G-N: Who Am I? Part 2

This is some great stuff for you to think about over the weekend from my good friend and mentor John Woodall who is the Pastor of  Care at North Point Community Church. If you didn’t see part 1 of the series Click Here and get caught up.

Last time we looked at the first 10 areas that make all of us unique. Here are some additional areas.

11. Our Natural Gifts: Am I an artistic, athletic, academic?

12. Our Spiritual Gifts: Romans 12:6-8 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. [7] If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; [8] if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

13. Our education

14. Our experiences: This is our LifeMap. It is important to remember that God has been with us and leading all the time.

Deut. 8:2-3 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. [3] He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

15. Our spiritual pathway: There are many different ways to draw near to God. Some are intellectual, relational, worship, nature, contemplative, serving, and activist. (See Gary Thomas, Sacred Pathways)

16.     Our style of leadership: There are many different styles of leadership: Visionary, entrepreneurial, strategic, motivational, shepherding, role model and managerial

17.     Our style of ministry: Someone has suggested that there are different styles of ministry based on the offices of Christ.

a.    Prophetic disruptions

b.    Kingly leadership

c.    Priestly connection

18.    Our passion for ministry

19.    Our genius, highest and best use or our core competencies

20.    Our weaknesses

I believe that when we take the time to see how fearfully and wonderfully we are made, we come alive. We experience a peace and joy that is so fulfilling. Our hearts are at rest and we fulfill the purposes of God for our lives in our generation. How well do you know who you are and who you aren’t? Take some time to discover.

D-E-S-I-G-N: Who Am I? Part 1 – John Woodall

Guest Bloggger John Woodall

If you’ve been reading my blog you know I’m a huge fan of my friend John Woodall.  He is the Care Pastor at North Point Communty Church, speaks often and is Andy Stanley’s emergency backup speaker for sunday mornings. He’s the target I”m shooting for in all fiver areas of my life  (Life, Family, Marriage, Church and Work).  God used him at a critical point in my marriage where things could have gone in many bad direnctions.  Because I know he loves me, I ripped this from his blog and will ask for his permission later.

D-E-S-I-G-N: Who Am I? Part 1

I have been thinking a lot about that question, “Who Am I?” and this subject of DESIGN. I have often thought, “God, why did you make me like this?” For so long I have wanted to be like so many other people. I am not sure why or from where this has come. Woundedness? Pride?  The world, flesh or devil? I don’t really know.
I sensed the Lord say to me one day, “John, you are growing in self awareness”. As my soul has been healing and restoring, I have not looked out so much to others. I am seeing more clearly how and why God made me. There are so many levels to a human being. It is so true that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. I have thought of at least 21 levels.
1.    We were thought of and designed before the foundation of the world.

Jeremiah 1:4-5 The word of the Lord came to me, saying, [5] “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

2.    We were seen and formed uniquely in our mother’s womb.

Psalm 139:13-16 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. [14] I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.  [15] My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, [16] your eyes saw my unformed body.

3.    Our parents were assigned to us
4.    Our gender was established
5.    Our race and nationality was set

Acts 17:26 From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.

6.    Our time in history

Acts 13:36 “For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed.

7.    Our number of days and time of death

Psalm 139:16 All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

8.    Our brothers and sisters
9.    Our birth order
10.  Our temperament

There are many assessments to help us understand the way God made us and understand other…DISC; MBTI; Rightpath; Strength Finder

Reflection and Preparation – John Woodall (Part 1 – Life)

In 2009 I had the incredible opportunity to spend a year being mentored by John Woodall who is the director of CARE for North Point Ministries.  We specifically focused on five important areas in our life.   Below you’ll find the yearly review he sends out to each of his graduates to re-center as we prepare for a new year.  You can follow him on twitter: @johnwoodall.  He’ll get you thinking…

Reflection and Preparation – John Woodall

The habit or practice of reflection has increased and become very important to me over the years. I have noticed people are running so fast and not taking the time to sit, think, review, remember and re-adjust their lifestyles and schedules. With some regular times of daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reflection, it can lead to peace, stability and very purposeful living.

The following questions are to get us thinking about this past year and prepare us for “The Best Year Ever.” How am I doing in the major areas of my LIFE, MARRIAGE, FAMILY, WORK and CHURCH?

  1. Life
                 A. Spirit

1)      Do I love God, my Father with all my heart, soul, mind and strength?
2)      Am I growing in my intimate relationship with Jesus Christ?
3)      Am I living and walking by the Holy Spirit?
4)      How is my time in the Scriptures? Am I delighting in and meditating on God’s Word day and night?
5)      Do I find myself praying more or less about all things?
6)      What 3 spiritual practices generated the greatest benefit?

                  B. Soul (Mind, Will and Emotions)

1)      MIND
a)      What am I doing to daily renew my mind?
b)      Are my thoughts pure, lovely, noble, truthful, and full of praise?
c)      What are the best three books I read last year?

2)      WILL
a)      What kind of choices did I make last year?
b)      Did I choose the way of life versus death?
c)      Did I choose the way of the Spirit versus the way of the flesh?
d)     Did I choose to walk by faith versus walk by sight?

3)      EMOTIONS
a)      Was I full of love, joy, peace, patience and self-control?
b)      Was there any guilt, greed or jealousy that needs to be resolved?
c)      Is there any anger or hurt that needs to be forgiven?

                   C. Body (Did I live in B.A.L.A.N.C.E?)

1)      BREATHING  – Am I getting enough oxygen in my blood?
2)      AWARENESS – Am I aware of what is going on in my body?
3)      LIQUIDS -  Am I drinking enough water?
4)      ANTIOXIDANTS  – Am I taking the right of Multi, C and E?
5)      NUTRITION – Am I eating 3-5 small meals of protein, carbs and good fats?
6)      CONDITIONING  – Am I exercising 3-5 times a week?
7)      EFFECTIVE REST  – Am I getting 7-8 hours of sleep?
8)      What three ways will I take better care of myself this next year?

11)    Did we have our monthly MSM, Marriage Staff Meetings?
12)    How was our “Weekly Focus” time?
13)    Did I provide her the structure or spontaneity she needs and desires?
14)    Did I give her the full and focused attention she deserves?
15)    On a scale of 1-10, how would my wife rate our marriage?
16)    What needs to be done to get it to a 10?

4.  WORK
  1. Did I see my work as a gift from God?
  2. Did I do my work as unto the Lord?
  3. Am I living as a man under authority showing respect, gratefulness, a servant and quiet spirit?
  4. Am I showing excellence and diligence in my work?
  5. Am I taking the low place and trusting God for His invitations, appointments and exaltation in His time?
  6. Am I “choosing to cheat”?
  7. What three work relationships need more time?
5. CHURCH/MINISTRY
  1. Am I living in community with other believers?
  2. Am I investing, influencing and inviting other outsiders?
  3. Where did I strategically serve in my local church?
Some additional questions:

In reviewing last year, what areas reveal the most progress? The least progress?
* Most –
* Least -

What is the wildest, most unconventional thing I could do this next year to live with more passion? What out of the box thinking could we do?

Who will hold me accountable to be my best self this next?

The most significant way I will influence others is…

List 3-5 of your best achievements this past year

Strengths and Successes – Identify what has worked well this past year

Struggles and Stresses – What has not been working so well?

Habits – What are the most purposeful daily habits you could develop/upgrade over the next 12 months? Develop 1 habit at a time, not 2, not 5.

Clutter – Clutter can be anything that is taking up room in my mind…for example we have 1000 AU’s (Attention Units) and anything from a sick relative, to a way ward child, to troublesome marriage, to bitterness can all take up mental and emotional capacity. We must un-clutter our minds so that we can reach full potential.
* Identify 3 messes or clutter projects you’d like to clean up in the next 12 months?

Character – Proverbs 22:1 says A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
* Identify 3 qualities you’d like to see associated with your name as well as how you’d define each quality.
